Employee Voice

Employee Voice

Trade Union is a legally organized community of employees. Trade unions also considered as employees voice.  Trade unions bargain with the management on behalf of employees. Trade union and employer signed a collective agreement to form a union and employees have the freedom to join. Most public sector organizations have Trade unions. Nevertheless, private sector employees also facing labour exploitation more than public sector employees. Sri Lanka has a huge number of unions for employees as well as students.

Trade Unions Involvement

Trade unions have the strength and power to influence management in an organization to make a good working condition for the employees. Trade unions fight for job security and decent wages, injustice faced by employees in the workplace, raise voice against management for labour exploitation and to protect democratic rights of the employees and ensures employee wellbeing (Weller, 1999). But trade unions usually do not intervene for disciplinary actions against the employee.

If any disagreement caused by trade unions and employer, trade unions influence employees to raise their voice against management by forming strikes, work to rule, employees refuse to work more than office hours, work slowdown for minimum output.

The last couple of years increased the number of agitations and protests in public sector - Railway workers strike for complete privatization and Plantation workers struggled for higher wages and Telecom workers demand permanent employment.

However, Trade unions and employees face a risk of forming strikes because of the failure of disagreement of negotiation can be caused workers to lose their jobs (Labour unrest-Daily mirror-18th December 2017).

Therefore, employers have a major responsibility to create a good working condition for the employees to reduce conflicts within the organization.

  1. One hand having a trade union for an organization is advantage for the employees. But in one side its not.Because it can cause conflicts between management and the employees. However trade unions can negotiate with management for mutual give and take in matters of increased productivity. When there is higher demand of production trade unions can negotiate better remuneration, so that both workers and managements benefited.
